I bought all 3 volumes. Beautiful. Was sad to read that Steve Coe, the musician behind all of Sheila Chandra’s music, died a couple years ago as well as the illness that has kept Sheila Chandra from singing (and speaking, apparently). Life is fragile.

Ravi Shankar RIP

December 12, 2012

In New YorkThis morning I was devastated to hear the news that Ravi Shankar died yesterday.

I discovered his music in 1967 when my mother (by my request) gave me “Ravi Shankar in New York” for xmas. It changed my life.

In 2006, my (then) husband and I went to a concert in Berkeley, California. By mere fate I was sitting next to Shankar’s wife. I chatted with her and she kindly offered to take us backstage afterward to meet him. I was so verklempt when I met him that I could barely talk. He was lovely and it’s an experience I’ll never forget.

His recordings are some of the most beautiful music ever.

Ravi Shankar: Sitar Concertos and other works

April 4, 2012

Composer: Ravi Shankar
Works: Sitar Concertos and other works
Performer: Ravi Shankar, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Yehudi Menuin, Andre Previn & the London Symphony Orchestra, Zubin Mehta & The London Philharmonic Orchestra

More Ravi Shankar!

I already had these recordings in their original release but I decided it was worth having the alleged “remastered” version. Odd that it doesn’t list Jean-Pierre Rampal on the cover since he is the performer, with Shankar, on the first track.

Gorgeous music.

Ravi Shankar: Symphony

April 3, 2012

Composer: Ravi Shankar
Works: Symphony
Performer: Anoushka Shankar and the London Philharmonic Orchestra

I don’t usually fall for the “iTunes has it first so you have to wait to get it on Amazon” trick but I just couldn’t wait for this. I have worshipped Ravi Shankar since I owned my first LP of his in 1967 (“Ravi Shankar in New York” which is still a super-fave).

A few years ago I met him backstage after a concert. I could barely talk I was so emotional.
