Haydn: Baryton Trios

January 8, 2011

Composer: Joseph Haydn
Title: Baryton Trios
Performer: Esterhazy Ensemble

OK, I admit it, I bought the whole thing. I can’t resist the word “complete” so I bought the box set of Complete Baryton Trios.

The baryton is a very unusual instrument and, for the most part, sounds like a viola da gamba. Gorgeous. The music is sublime and the performance is exquisite.

The downside is that to get the whole set I had to buy the cd’s. Yes, I could have purchased each volume as a download. For $8.99 each! WTF. That’s 21 x $8.99 = $188.79 for the same music I can get on cd for around $78.00 (£49.99). Why the record company decided to offer the individual volumes as downloads but not the complete set is a mystery and a slap in the face to music buyers.

As much as I dislike buying cd’s (storage space, etc.) I bought them this time because this is something I really wanted. And I’m so glad I did.

For most people, buying a couple individual volumes is probably enough. 21+ hours of string trios are not for everyone. But for me, it’s heaven on earth.
